"Avoiding Poker Tilt"

5 Ways to Stay Off Tilt

Did you know?

DQ'd in World Championship?
In 2007, PokerStars disqualified TheV0id, the winner of the main event of the World Championship of Online Poker for breaching their terms of service.

#5 - Bankroll Management Poker players tend to get stressed because they have wagered more than they can afford to. This doesn’t mean it is easy for micro-stakes players to stay calm and cool. Micro-stakes players can also get over excited and make the wrong decision, or they can let an opponent irritate them witless. But players who have bet more than their bankroll permit have another thing to worry and get stressed about, especially if the cards are not falling their way.

#4 - Be Positive Oh, those negative people. Are they getting the best of you? Poker is a game of skill and strategy and players need to think clearly and make the right decisions at the table. Poker should be played with a positive and relaxed state of mind. There’s a book called, ‘The Secret’ that suggests successful people are just that because they have the ability to throw positive thoughts out into the universe and expect positive results in return. Maybe that is the secret! This means no calling the dealers names or getting mad at opponents who play bad an get lucky. “Nice hand sir,” seems to work for me. I’ll get the money back.

2-to-1 you'll LOVE it!

#3 - Eat Well Many poker players make the mistake of playing poker on an empty stomach. Big mistake! A well-fed poker player can think more clearly and make better decisions. Keep it light though, nothing worse than a heavy steak and mashed potatoes weighing you down and making you sleepy at the table.  Poker players are advised to eat food that is not only nutritious, but also mood elevating. This will help them relax and play better.

#2 - Relax The importance of relaxation cannot be stressed further. Players should relax before, during, and even after the game. If you are feeling on the tilt, during any course of a game, take deep breaths. Some casinos, like the Commerce in Los Angeles, offer massages. Take advantage. On you own, you can contract the muscles in your hands and legs till you start feeling relaxed once again. These simple exercises will help. The next step is to think of a happy moment or about someone you love.

#1 - Take a Break If you’re feeling terrible, upset or down during your poker session, stand-up and take a break. Easy enough right? Take a break, a moment to relax your mind and body. Remember, poker is just a game, after all, and games are meant for fun. If you’re not having fun don't play!
